Winter Spiced Hot Cacao

This recipe is a wonderful way to get your chocolate fix. I often have it after dinner to finish off a meal. You can experiment with different spices as well like cayenne, cinnamon and cardamom.

Why cacao?

  • It contains fibre – 1 tbsp of cacao contains approximately 2g of fibre.

  • Full of antioxidants - those antioxidants are called polyphenols, which not only support the body's response to oxidative stress and inflammation but also have prebiotic effects that can help support beneficial gut bacteria

  • Uses maple syrup - using pure maple syrup is lower GI than sugar meaning that it can reduce sugar spikes and crashes.

Ingredients

Serves 1

  • 1 1/4 cup of milk of your choice

  • 1 tablespoon of cacao powder

  • 1 tablespoon of pure maple syrup

  • 1/4 teaspoon of ginger powder

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil (optional) - I find it adds a nice richness to the drink

Method

  1. Add the milk, cacao, maple syrup, ginger and salt to a blender and blend until smooth and frothy.

  2. Pour into a small saucepan and gently warm over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Don't allow it to boil.

  3. If using, stir through the coconut oil just before serving for a richer, creamier finish.

Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy.
